Disney Channel After Dark: Miley Cyrus Edition

Disney Channel should just stop being a kid’s channel. Former Disney Channel stars have been in the news as of late for various reasons. The most talked about recently has been Miley Cyrus. Cyrus has received criticism for her new, cutting-edge style. Cyrus went through what some would call drastic changes compared to the innocent child star you are used to seeing on Hannah Montana. I call it growing up and adapting to the always changing world.

Cyrus, once an innocent child star, has grown up. Some critics (and parents) are having a hard time coming to terms with that. Cyrus has become one of the most talked about subjects in pop culture. She has become this free-spirited girl who likes to have fun and twerk. Personally, I do not object to this new Miley. This new, avant-garde Miley Cyrus has earned my support. Cyrus may not be the biggest role model for young girls – that is debatable. Ultimately, you cannot deny the respect Cyrus deserves.
Cyrus’ new innovative style has caused quite the stir among critics and parents. The most recent incidents were Cyrus’ performance at the 2013 Video Music Awards and the video for her song “Wrecking Ball.”
“You’re wanting to make history,” said Cyrus regarding her VMA performance. Cyrus’ performed her hit single “We Can’t Stop” and a gritty, raunchy performance of “Blurred Lines” with Robin Thicke. Cyrus goes on to talk about how this should not be new to pop music. “Madonna’s done it. Britney’s done it,” explained Cyrus.
Miley Cyrus’ father, Billy Ray Cyrus, expressed no issues with his daughter’s performance. “Thank God for so many blessings tonight. Continue to pray for world peace. More love…less hate,” Billy Ray Cyrus tweeted. Cyrus later stated the tweet had nothing to do with Miley’s performance.
The video for Cyrus’ newest song “Wrecking Ball” has gained buzz in media recently. The video content has drawn critics away from the real meaning of the song. The critics would rather pay more attention to a nude Miley Cyrus swinging back and forth on a wrecking ball. “All I wanted was to break down your walls/ All you ever did was break me/ Yeah, you wreck me,” sings Cyrus.
The speculation about who the song is about is quite evident if you listen. Cyrus and her fiancé, Liam Hemsworth, have called off their engagement. The reports were that Cyrus and Hemsworth had split months ago. This speculation arose after the couple had not been seen together in months until the red-carpet premiere of Hemsworth’s movie Paranoia. The reports confirmed the split on Monday.
Miley Cyrus’ new style and new music has received mixed reactions. Personally, I support Cyrus’ new approach. Cyrus’ new album Bangerz is expected to be released on October 4th. You can expect the all the same wild, eyebrow-raising antics we’ve seen this summer from Miley, and more.
