Timberlake
Does More Than ‘Take Back The Night’
Would it be blasphemous to say that
Justin Timberlake has not dominated pop music for a majority of this year? JT
released his third solo album The 20/20
Experience back in March. The singles “Mirrors” and “Suit & Tie” which
features rapper Jay-Z have received numerous amounts of radio play over the
past couple months. According to Billboard, the album sold 968,000 copies within
its first week of sales, which became Timberlake’s best-selling debut since the
start of his solo career.
Fans of the singer waited and longed
for a new material from the artist. Timberlake’s last studio album FutureSex/LoveSounds was released back
in 2006. The album became Timberlake’s first #1 album and went Platinum in 12
different countries worldwide. The album also included the hit singles
“SexyBack”, “My Love” featuring rapper T.I., and “What Goes Around… Comes
Around”. Rolling Stone magazine placed
this album at number 46 for its list of best albums of the 2000s.
In his seven-year hiatus, Timberlake
starred in hit movies such as Bad Teacher
with Cameron Diaz, Friends with Benefits
with Mila Kunis, and The Social Network
with Jesse Eisenberg, which won three Academy Awards. Along with star roles in hit
movies, Timberlake also married actress Jessica Biel on October 19th,
2012.

Timberlake’s 2013 comeback still has
more to come. At the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards, Timberlake performed a
career-spanning medley of his past and present work. Timberlake’s performance
set a record for longest VMA performance lasting over 15 minutes. In this
performance, Timberlake brought his *NSYNC brethren together to perform parts
of their hit songs “Bye, Bye, Bye” and “Girlfriend”. According to an article in
The Huffington Post, “appearances by
all five members of the group have been rare since the release of their last
studio album back in 2001.” To cap off that night, Timberlake was honored with
the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard award at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards.
Timberlake plans to release a
follow-up to his album The 20/20
Experience later on this month. The sequel, The 20/20 Experience: 2 of 2, features Timberlake’s newest single
“Take Back the Night.” The single’s lyrics sparked concerns because of the anti-rape
organization that has the same name. Timberlake later apologized stating “He
was unaware of the organization upon the release of the song.”
The expected release date for
Timberlake’s new album The 20/20
Experience: 2 of 2 is September 30th.
