A
high school senior is suing her parents for not paying for her private
education. Rachel Canning, 18, has accused her parents of kicking her out of
their New Jersey home. She has stated that her parents left her with no way of
supporting herself on her own. The lawsuit asks that her parents pay for the
remaining semester of her high school career, her current living and transportation
expenses and her legal fees for the case against them.
However, her parents have a slightly
different story. They say that Rachel left because she wanted to live without
supervision and without rules. Her parents also did not like her boyfriend, who
they forbid her to see and blamed for her recent suspension from school.
After Rachel ran away, she stayed with
her boyfriend for two days, and then moved in with a friend and has been living
there ever since. Her friend’s parents are currently paying for her legal
matters in court, and are expecting money from the lawsuit to reimburse them.
Sean Canning, Rachel’s father, thinks
that the whole thing has gotten out of hand. He wrote in court documents that
the Inglesinos, Rachel’s friend’s parents, have made matters worse. They have
enabled to the situation to escalate to an absurd level, and they think their
parenting style is superior to that of the Canning’s.
