The
situation in the Ukraine has been heading downhill for weeks, and the country
is heading straight for a maelstrom of political strife, and possibly open
warfare. Secession may be in the near future for the struggling nation, or
perhaps even a full-on civil war. Civil war would be the worst thing possible
for the world, as it could easily turn into World War III.
The eastern Ukraine, which is filled
with Russian immigrants, is supportive of closer ties to Russia, and believes
that merging the Ukraine with Russia would be the best possible outcome of this
struggle. "I'm for living in one country, with no borders, like we used
to. Like the fingers on one hand," said 60-year-old Lyudmila Zhuravlyova,
who signed a petition asking for Russian President Vladimir Putin's military
invention to stop "political persecution and physical annihilation of the
Russian-speaking and Orthodox population."
Many of the older generation who
remember the Soviet Union wish they could go back to that time. Not only were
jobs more plentiful, but they simply felt more secure. Many residents of the
Ukraine have not held a single job since the abolition of the Soviet Union, and
they blame democracy. Many people in Luhansk, an Eastern Ukraine city, have
families on the other side of the border and they say that life is better of
there. More jobs, more food, more security. These tales, however true, are
leading the way for a large-scale rebellion, and perhaps even another World
War.
