In Tennessee, there are hundreds of people who are forced to go to bed hungry due to the fact that they lack the funds to acquire sufficient food. It is Second Harvest’s mission to put an end to that. Some of these programs include Food for Kids that sends kids home from school with backpacks full of kid friendly food and The Food Rescue Program that gathers prepared and perishable food from local restaurants, schools and grocery stores to distribute to the hungry. The Rural Route program takes food to pantries and schools that lack proper equipment or funds to obtain it themselves. These are merely a few techniques that Second Harvest has used to positively affect the population of hungry people in our state.
Several Knox County high schools including South Doyle have decided to give back to the community by participating in a food drive to collect canned foods, peanut butter and cereal to donate to second harvest. In fact, South Doyle will be competing with Seymour to see who can accumulate more food to donate to the program.
“I think that the fact that we are competing with Seymour is great because the rivalry between us will cause both schools to donate more food and we will be able to help more people,” says sophomore, Jullianna Justice.

There are two large blue bins in the main office where you can donate any non-perishable foods to feed hungry children, adults and the elderly in Tennessee.
