Forest Gump is unquestionably a
classic story that has captured the hearts of millions of viewers. As it nears
its 20th anniversary, theatres will be once again screening the film
that has been proven hit even after two decades. Forest Gump, played by Tom
Hanks, lived an extraordinarily eventful life in which he learned many valuable
lessons.
One of the most prominent lessons learned throughout the movie is that it
is vital to be kind.
After earning an enormous sum of money, Forest says, “There’s only so much fortune a
man really needs and the rest is just for showing off.”
Forest practiced what he preached and gave away a huge portion of his wealth
to those who really did need it. The beginning of the movie also exhibits how
hurtful unkindness can be, when the children that go to school with Forest
bully him.
But as Forest would say, “You’ve got to put the past behind you before
you can move on.”
One of the most famous quotes from Forest Gump is “Life is like a box of
chocolates; you never know what you’re gonna get.”
Forest teaches us to take life
head on and not worry if somebody else has been given a better life than you
have. He was born with a back that was ‘as crooked as a politician’ but he
didn’t let it faze him and later, he spent three years running across the
country and enjoyed a career as a college athlete.
Furthermore, Forest taught us that it’s important to stay true to
yourself and do what you love. He loved to mow his lawn so much that he still
mowed it after he became a “gazzillionaire” He probably looked foolish from the
outside but he didn’t mind; he was happy.
When Jenny asked Forest what he wanted to be he responded, “Aren’t I
going to be me?”
He never wanted to impress
anybody, he just wanted to be happy and make other people happy along the way.
As Mrs. Gump would say, “What’s normal anyways?”
