Cherokees visit the
Castle
The
South Doyle high school football team finished up their season Friday November
1st with a loss to Sevier County. The game was close but the Kees
just couldn’t seem to pull out a win. This does not mean they’re done for good
though! In fact, even with the loss the Cherokees still managed to snag a spot
in the playoffs. A season goal for the team was indeed be in the playoffs.
Friday
November 8th the Cherokees (6-4) traveled to Bristol to take on
Tennessee High (6-4). The game was held at Tennessee High School’s stadium
known as “The Castle”.
The
players, trainers, and coaches left South Doyle around 1pm on Friday and began
the road trip to Bristol. “The bus was so nice, it was a double decker! There
was even a TV for us to watch movies on,” Junior Harley Wheeler expressed with
gratitude.
When I asked
about their pre game feelings the boys had very little to say but were
confident in their answers. Junior Malik Lundy said, “We were focused on
winning but honestly all I could think about was how cold I was and Windy Gap.”
I also asked Junior Harley Wheeler his pre game thoughts and he expressed, “I
went into the game knowing we’d win, we have worked hard over the past week!”
The boys hard work absolutely paid of when that final buzzer rang and a score
of 41-14 was left glowing on the scoreboard for all to see. This was South
Doyle’s first playoff win since 1992!
“It was
unreal, playing our game in a castle and then actually winning,” Junior Kerrie
Heptinstall added. I was curious to see how the boys felt about the rest of the
playoff games. I asked Wheeler how far he thinks the Kees will go. He responded
in a humble manner and with little cockiness.
“I think we’ll go far as long as we work hard and strive to be the best
we can,” he replied.
The
Cherokees will travel to Anderson County this Friday for the second round of
the playoffs! Make sure to congratulate a player or coach if you see them this
week and wish them luck at this Friday’s game!
