I wake to the sound of a faint scratching
outside the department store window. A ray of sunlight peaks through the
boarded up windows letting me know it’s morning. I jump up to check where the
scratching is coming from, and I follow it to the side window. I grab a piece
of board from the floor and nail it up to the broken space and if it was pushed
just a little more, a roamer would have been able to sense me. Since everything
has gone awry, I’ve encountered several near death experiences with roamers, which
has made me more alert. But with this outbreak, we must all be alert to our
surrounding or risk being bit. I haven’t spoken to anyone in 2 weeks, ever
since I had to… put my friend down. I know putting down sounds like an animal
being killed, but if you could’ve seen the way she came at me… with teeth bared
ready for flesh… it would be just like putting an animal down. It took an
emotional toll on me killing Emily, I cried for the first week. Until I
realized she wasn’t the only one who became one of those roamers that walked
aimlessly only stopping for living flesh. They were humans but not really
living, and it seems as though no on around here is. The day that all of this
went down was two weeks ago, I was in Tanger Outlet on a shopping spree with my
friend Emily. We were walking through the breezeway when someone grabbed Emily
and bit her, which shocked us and then we panicked. I drug her into the nearest
store, which happened to be where I still am. We started to nurse the wound,
thinking about how to get her to the car and take her to the hospital. Then the
blood vessels in her eyes begin to burst, and blood drips down from her nose
and I couldn’t fix it. I just laid her down and held her hand until her chest
stopped rising. I must have fallen asleep because I wake and Emily is gone. I
go on the search for her and that’s when it happened, she came running at me
and tried to bite me. That is when I had to put her down. After thinking of
this scenario I decide to do something else to occupy my mind. I start
wandering around the store filled with Nike brand everything when I hear the
roar of an engine outside.
