Black Friday is the most popular shopping day of the year, and for
retail employees the most dreaded day of the year. Black Friday falls after the
fourth Thursday of November on a Friday obviously, or the day after
Thanksgiving. Black Friday is supposedly
the first day of Christmas shopping, and all the retailers have amazing sales
that day. It has been the busiest shopping day of the year since 2005, although
news report were inaccurate and have described it as the busiest shopping day
of the year for much longer. The name is from Philadelphia, where is originally
was meaning the traffic which would happen the day after Thanksgiving. Using the
term, Black Friday, started before 1961 and then expanded to other places
besides Philadelphia around 1975. Later
on is when the meaning of it began to change. Retailers originally had a
decline in finances from January to November, and Black Friday is the point
when retailer’s profit begins to increase.
Most retailers would
open at 6:00 am on Black Friday until the late 2000’s some started to open as
early as 4:00 am. In 2011 some retail stores opened at midnight that was, at
the time, something crazy. In 2012 Wal-Mart and some other retailers opened at
8:00 pm on Thanksgiving Day.
Black Friday is known for the aggressive shoppers that usually result
in shootings, assaults, and many fight within popular stores. Some incidents in
the past Black Fridays include: A Toys for Tots volunteer in Georgia was
stabbed by a shoplifter, two people were shot at Toys R’ Us during a fight in
California, and a man was trampled in New York at a Target in 2008. No reports of deaths have been recorded on
Black Friday, but at this pace I am sure there will be one soon.
Black Friday is a
stressful day for all the customers, but an even stressful day for the
employees working on this day. I am a cashier at American Eagle Outfitters, and
next Friday is the first Black Friday I have ever worked. I am very stressed
and scared to see what is going to happen. I have never even been to Black
Friday as a customer so I really do not know what to expect. I mean I have seen
stories about it on the news and the Internet, but other than that it is going
to be a whole new experience for me. Please pray for me that I keep my sanity.
