Three years ago, Eminem dropped his last
solo album before going on a somewhat music hiatus. Slim Shady recently dropped
his 8th studio album, The
Marshall Mathers LP 2, on November 5th. The new album has gained
quite the buzz and notoriety since its release over a week ago. The album has
produced three chart topping songs in “Berzerk”, “Rap God”, and “The Monster”
which features singer Rihanna.
Besides
the excellent lyrical content, a thing that gained the album its notoriety was
the production. The producers on the album ranged from Rick Rubin to Slim
Shady’s mentor Dr. Dre. The sound on the album is a feel of nostalgia and
contains a 90’s, Beastie Boys-esque feel to it. The album features samples from
the Zombies’ “Time of the Season” , Joe Walsh’s “Life’s Been Good”, and along
with various other throwbacks.
Along
with the production, the album also featured very little features. Shady
enlisted the assistance of singers Skylar Grey, Rihanna, Nate Ruess of Fun.,
Sia, and rapper Kendrick Lamar.
According
to Billboard, the first week sales of
the album reached a total of 792,000 albums sold. Eminem’s album became the
second highest selling album of this year behind Justin Timberlake’s The 20/20 Experience, which debuted back
in March. The critics were skeptical of the album, seeing how it was deemed a
sequel to The Marshall Mather LP that
came out in 2000. The album in a few songs does revisit the previous album and
creates a feel of remembrance. The album all in all possess the qualities of
rap album of the year which is hard to say seeing how there were releases from
other great aging hip-hop artists like Jay-Z and Kanye West. In other words, “Guess
who’s back, back again, Shady’s back, tell a friend.”
