Teachers take a walk in their
students’ shoes by going through a student’s life day by day with the help of a
recent event that occurs annually. The Teacher Scavenger Hunt allows teachers to
know their students better. The event does this by allowing teachers to see
where their students live and how that environment influences classroom
behavior. Many teachers have come forward and begun to participate in this
helpful event. One of the many teachers participating in this event is one of
the high school’s Algebra/Geometry teachers and event creator, Julianne Bowman.
When
starting the hunt, teachers want to understand their students better. Bowman,
who grew up here and graduated here, is a well-known teacher at SDHS and is a
great choice for organizing this new and improved event.
“ We do the scavenger hunt so
that everyone can be familiar with our area, and so that they can see the great
parts of South-Knoxville,” said Bowman.
With
the variety of students that make up the population of SDHS, there comes
difference in upbringing and behavior. By allowing teachers to see where their
students’ come from, teachers can limit the amount of issues that may occur at
points in the school year because if the teachers know where their students
come from they can make the learning more relevant to their students. Connections
are made due to this event that have a positive effect in the classroom on both
teacher and student.
“The better the relationship between teacher
and student, the more willing students are to learn and to work.”
