FIFA banned Spanish giant Barcelona has
been banned from the next two transfer windows (14 months) due to breaches of
protocol involving underage players. The disciplinary panel at FIFA has found Barcelona
and the Spanish Football Association guilty of making and allowing illegal
deals for underage players.
In addition to the transfer ban, the
Barcelona organization has been fined a measly $500,000, which is pocket change
for the massive club. The big problem is the transfer ban, with long- time
defender Carlos Puyol injured and veteran goalkeeper Victor Valdes leaving in
June. Barcelona was all set to sign German goalkeeper Andre Ter-Stegan in July,
but this massive ban will put those plans on hold.
A Barcelona official claimed they
were analyzing the situation and would make a statement at the appropriate
time, but the club is expected to appeal against the shock sanction. An appeal
would have to be filed through FIFA within the next three days. It is expected
that FIFA would deny the appeal to try and make an example out of the Spanish
powerhouse which would shock the world.
