Spring Exercises

1.    Bike Riding- This is a fun activity and also great exercise. The only problem is loading your bike up and finding a place to go bike riding. If you live in a big neighborhood you can ride your bike around it. Also, you could bike ride the side walk from our high school down to the Bonny Kate library. I love bike riding because it is great exercise but is not as hard on your knees as running or jogging.

2.    Jogging- This is the stereotypical way to exercise, but it is a good way to stay in shape. If you want to run, jog, or walk but do not know where to go, try some of the following locations: the side walk from SDHS to the Bonny Kate library, your neighborhood or a friends neighborhood, Bonny Kate Elementary School’s track, or any park. There are so many places, but those are just a few locally. Many people complain about having sore knees after they run and that is because all the impact of your upper body shoots to your knees when your foot makes contact with the ground. To help this there are in-souls that you can put in your shoes, there are also special shoes made for running (but they are really expensive), and if it gets really bad medicine stores like CVS and Walgreens carry knee braces. If you are running in old, worn down shoes, this may also cause problems because all the padding in the souls to help with the impact are squashed and worn down so they do not help as much.

3.    Hiking- If you like walking but want some scenery, take advantage of the Great Smokey Mountain National Park. You can also go to Ijams Nature Center. There are also some trails around the quarry. This is a great way to get outside and exercise. If you like taking pictures you could take your camera on a hike and get some great pictures.

4.     Kayaking- If you like the peacefulness of the calm lake on a warm, sunny day then you would love kayaking. Although kayaking sounds relaxing, it does work your arms. You have to fight against the current and wind one way, but you do get to float back.  I love kayaking with my family. It is a great way to work your arm muscles and catch some sun on the water.

5.    Swimming- We usually do not think about swimming being exercise because it is just fun, but it is especially if you tread water or swim a good distance. Swimming not only works your arms and legs, but also helps with stamina because swimming can be strenuous. If you cannot bare the cold spring water some pools open early but most do not open until May.
