Step 1. Research what types of dance you are
interested in. There are many types of
dance including: ballet, pointe, jazz, lyrical, contemporary, tap, modern, and
hip- hop. You have to research all these
because everyone has a different take on most of these styles. Also, research different studios because are
better at different styles.
Step 2. Find a studio that offers the classes you
would like to attend. There are many
studios that are at most 30 minutes away, like: Elizabeth Williams School of
Dance, Knox Dance Works, Riversong Dance Studio, Artistic Dance Unlimited
(which is the one I dance at), and many others.
Step 3. Ask the studio owners about policies and
dress code. This is very important, especially
when you are older, because you want to make sure you follow the policies
correctly. Dress code is a major thing
in some studios, because some like leotard and tights for ballet and some are
more laid back. Also, some studios do
not allow you to wear baggy shirts or shorts in any class.
Step 4. Work hard every day if dance is what you
really want to do. If you want to pursue
a dance career, you need to work on your weaknesses and keep improving your
strengths. I know how hard it is to be
told over and over things to correct, and know how it feels when you cannot
make the connection to fix it. It is
hard, but you have to find a way to make the connection that works for you and
your body.
Step 5. Enjoy every minute of it. You have to enjoy every minute in dance, or
whatever you passion is because you never know what tomorrow will bring. One day you could be perfectly fine and the
next become very ill or get injured. If
you do not enjoy what you love, you might have to step back and see why. “Is it the coaches or the sport?” You have to do what you enjoy, because what
if you wake up one day and are unable to do it?
My advice is do what you love to the fullest every time.
