Senior Sports

As a senior athlete getting accepted to college and being asked to play a sport is a dream. For seven of South Doyle’s seniors, this is a reality. All the different sports South Doyle’s seniors will be playing in college include golf, football, softball, and baseball.
Nino Young and Jacob Jones are going to Lee University to play rugby. Lee found Young and Jones through refereeing their games. The two of them have been talked to several times by scouts about attending the school in the fall. When asked about going to college with a fellow player Young said,
“I love it. We already have good chemistry together and us being there together makes the team a whole lot better than it is,” Young said.
Young will be making some transitions when joining the Lee team. He plays 8-man on South Doyle’s team, but instead of playing the familiar position he’s going to start as a prop. He has expressed some of his worries about this since 8-man deals with being in the back of a scrum. Instead of pushing on the butts of the players in front of him he’ll be in the front and will be pressing against the opponents shoulders. As a prop it takes a longer time to get out of a scrum rather than as an 8-man where its easier to just slip out. Young has had many successes as South Doyle’s 8-man.
“My biggest achievement playing South Doyle rugby was getting to know everybody there and becoming friends. Not just going to State or Nationals or anything like that, but becoming brothers with my teammates,” Young said about his high school career.

Blake Stansberry will be attending Middle Tennessee State University in the fall to play baseball. During Stansberry’s high school career he played pitcher and shortstop, but at MTSU he will be playing third base. On the softball side of it Kayla Cline will be attending Roane State to play shortstop. Her biggest achievements were being first team all district three years and setting the record for most home runs. Nick Jones will be playing golf at Hiwasse College in the fall. Jacob Faucette will be traveling out of state to Shenandoah in Virginia to play football, while Tyler Josey will be attending Tusculum for football in the fall.
