Changes in the CDC department

Among all of the exciting changes that have been happening at South Doyle, The Comprehensive Developmental Classrooms have not been left behind.
Last year, there were 20 CDC students at South Doyle; a fairly small number compared to this year’s class of 26. Due to the increase in the amount of students, a new classroom has been created to suit the specific needs of each child.
Mrs. Emily told us,
“Having so many students has been difficult, but has proven to be a very good thing because with the extra classroom, each child gets more one on one attention.”
All of the students with developmental delays are given more learning opportunities as a result of the third classroom being created.
“A lot of these kids will be able to go out and get jobs in this community” says Emily.
For now, the CDC program will not be hiring any new teachers this school year, although Mrs. Emily believes that it would really help to have a few extra hands. When asked about additional peer tutors, Mrs. Emily responded with an enthusiastic “absolutely!”
Another change going on this year is an increased focus on the Special Olympics.
Mrs. Emily says "The Special Olympics benefits the kids by giving them a sense of purpose and normalcy”.
More peer tutors will certainly be necessary if they are going to accomplish the task of putting emphasis on this event.  There are already several students that peer tutor for the CDC classes, including Senior Lauren Barlow.
“I feel like I’ve always had a connection with CDC kids, “ stated Barlow.
Peer tutors like Barlow who work with the CDC children are exposed to a potential career path by being given the responsibilities needed for the job of a certified special education instructor.
“I haven’t chosen my path yet but special education is an option” says Barlow.
