Back to School Fashion

Hair and Nails
When it comes to fashion, there are many things that need to work together to make the perfect outfit. Along with make up and clothes, there are hair and nails. We talked to some students here at our school, and here is what they had to say about fashion topics.
First, we asked some girls about how they liked their hair. We asked them how they preferred to wear their hair, and answers included things like down and natural and however I feel. More specific responses were “like Lorde”, as said by sophomore Jacinda Webb, and “down, with teased and fringed bangs’, which was mentioned by freshman Bailey Dorn. We then asked what some favorite braids were. The general response was the fishtail, but there were also mentions of the five strand and waterfall braids. The final question was on the debate of straight or curly. The all around response was straight, because curling takes too much time for them.

Next, we moved on to the topic of nails. When asked what the ideal or perfect color to paint their nails, responses were nude, “pinkish”, and black. These responses moved us on to the next question, which was “Black, goth or sleek?” As soon as the question was asked, everyone answered at the same time, “Sleek!” Black nails used to be referred to as goth and tacky, but now they are making a comeback as sleek and daring. The girls went on to say the color went with everything, and that it’s simple, yet daring. The final question was if designs were liked or disliked. Some said they disliked them, and that solid colors are better. Others said they liked them because it could make their nails look more interesting and fun.
When talking about fashion, there are many different opinions out there depending on who you ask. Opinions vary significantly, and some overlap. Whatever your style is, just make sure everything works together.

Makeup
Makeup looks can either make you or break you. Some makeup trends are great and stylish, others, however, are in need of some desperate attention. We recently interviewed some students on their opinions on the world of cosmetics, here is what they had to say.

Eyes and eyebrows are key ingredients in making a makeup look complete. However, there are some cases when people just need to stop, put down the eye pencil, and wash their face. We asked students what their favorite type of eyeliner was, whether it be liquid, gel, eye kohls, or cream pencils. (Those twisty retractable things that no one knows the right word for.) Cream pencil was the overall favorite for eyeliner. Next, we asked the students what they felt was going “too far” when it comes to eyebrows. (Something some people DESPERATELY need to learn) One student said “I don’t like it when they are too thick. They look like caterpillars.” Unless you’re Cara Delevigne, extremely thick brows won’t get you an extremely successful modeling career, so I would recommend to stop putting miracle grow on them and break out the tweezers…..or the lawn mower. Another student said they couldn’t stand brows that were obviously drawn on. This is a common mistake when dealing with brows. Try using a lighter hand when you are using a pencil, or use eyeshadow to fill them in to make them look more natural. Maybe they can take their coloring skills and go back to kindergarten. One student replied with an unusual response, “Not multi-colored.” Ombré brows were an extreme trend in Fall 2013. Brows going from lighter to slightly darker towards the end is widely accepted, however, if you try to pull off brows that are red in the front and dark brown on the end, you may need to go to art class.
The face is also an extremely important part when it comes to makeup. So, it’s important to get it looking flawless to compliment whatever look you are going for.  Choosing the right foundation for your skin is crucial to create a flawless complexion. There are many different types of foundations for different skin tones, like, gel, whipped, powder, stick, or liquid.  The overall favorite for foundation is powder. While powder foundation is good for staying matte all day, and for medium to full coverage, it is important to apply it in moderation to avoid the dreaded cake-face.
Lips are the finishing touch to any makeup look. However, finding the right color is difficult. When the students were asked what they thought the perfect lip color was, they replied with red, nude, pink, and peach. Red lips can turn any look glamorous, but it is important to find the right undertone for you skin type.  If you have a pale skin tone, go for a blue-ish red with a cool undertone. If you have a tan skin tone, go with an orange red with a warm undertone. Just remember, you can play up your eyes OR your lips, not both. (Unless you want to look like a six year old who got in to mommy’s makeup drawer.) Nude lips compliment any look. If you are tan, go for a brown nude, or if you are pale go for a beige true nude. Pink lips are a timeless favorite and can virtually look great on any skin tone.

Last, we just asked general questions about makeup brands and trends in general. We asked students what makeup look they preferred more, fresh and light, or dramatic. The unanimous answer was fresh and light. However, if you are feeling a bit daring, a dramatic makeup look will always capture attention. Next, we asked students their favorite makeup brand. The top responses were M.A.C., Urban Decay, Covergirl, and Maybelline. Last, we asked the students what trends they would like to see for the coming Spring 2014 season. They said they would like for the natural look to make a comeback, and for colorful eyeshadow to come into play.

Clothes

Fashion and style can be fun but also very hard and time consuming.   If you need some tips on winter clothes, or what could make or break your outfit, here are some tips on outfits and shoes from fellow students.  Hope this helps you.
If you are struggling with what to wear during the winter here are some cute hints: add a scarf, wear darker colors, warmer clothes, and layers for those chilly days.  Jacinda states that she is “more fashionable in the winter, because she can get away with more.”
Another way to make your outfit stand out is to add your favorite shoes.  Accessories also add style.  Some examples are: head bands, necklace, feathers, and so much more.  Finally patterns in your outfit really make it pop.  Just remember to always “express yourself,” says Bailey.
If you are curious about which style of shoes to wear during a specific season here are some options from students: fall and winter Alexus, Bailey, and Sydney said riding boots, summer Jacinda and Taylor say flip flops (rainbow), and year long shoes for Molly said Vans.
Lastly, if you need some style tips or advice: make a pinterest account and follow others and the trends for that season. Sydney says “dress comfortably” as a final thought.
