On Sunday, December 1, a Kansas City firefighter was
shot and killed by an off duty police officer. The firefighter, Anthony Bruno,
was celebrating his wedding to attorney Stephanie Steele. He was severely
intoxicated, and an altercation occurred between him and a cab driver over the
amount of cab fare.
The officer, Donald Hubbard, was working security at
a nearby hotel when he saw the fight and rushed over to stop it. Bruno then
fled the scene and Hubbard chased after him. Then, the two began fighting as
well. Bruno pinned Hubbard down on the ground and repeatedly hit him, giving
Hubbard no other choice but to fire his weapon.
Bruno was shot around 2:30a.m. and was rushed to the
hospital where he later died. Officer Hubbard will have to undergo facial reconstruction
surgery due to the injuries sustained during the incident. The cab driver was
left with bruises on his face, neck, and torso, but is expected to be fine.
