Teacher Appreciation Week- Thank you Mrs. Geyer

As it is teacher appreciation week, I want to thank a former teacher of mine for helping shape who I am today. I know not to make this some sob story or heartfelt letter, because she never was one for those type of things. But I would like to thank Sarah Geyer for what she helped me accomplish in just the two years I had her as my journalism teacher. Coming into journalism, I was not really sure how to write a news article, or how to be a journalist in the slightest. Now I don’t know anything else I’d rather be. She sat me down and though the class could be a bit chaotic, made myself and other newbies learn the basics. I remember being terrified for my first interview but her telling me how it was something every journalist learned to do and I would catch on eventually. The class was nothing less of intimidating but she made us all feel at home, and though we were students, we could act like ourselves around her. Mrs. Geyer was the first teacher to make me feel comfortable with my writing, even though it took a lot of editing to finally improve it. She helped me through some of my darkest times my freshmen year, and I will be forever thankful to her for that. Thank you Mrs. Geyer, hope you are well.

It’s finally October and all everyone thinks about in the month of October is Halloween. It’s not really Halloween without a little decoration. There are some easy crafts you can make for the upcoming holiday by yourself!
What You’ll Need:
·      Canvas
·      Paint (orange & black; or just Halloween themed)
·      12"x12"x1-1/2" small chalkboard
·      Halloween themed ribbon (1 YD, maybe less or more)
·      Scissors
·      Tacks (or you can use glue gun again)
·      Hot glue gun
·      Paint (to your liking) or colored chalk
How to:
·      First, you will need to paint the canvas with any color of your choice. Make sure it is that one solid color.
·      Then, you will need to hot glue the chalkboard on top once the paint is dry.
·      Next, you will need to cut the ribbon to fit around the chalkboard and glue it down, then let it dry.
·      After the glue dries, you will need to take ribbon and either glue or tack it on the back of the canvas to make a loop to hang it up from.
·      Once the glue is dried, use the chalk to write on the chalkboard something scary or Halloween related such as : “Ghostly greetings!”, “Stop in for a spell!”, “Please park all brooms at the door!” or another catchy phrase.
·      Once everything is dry, choose a place to display it such as your living room, kitchen or front door!

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

In The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, the main character is, obviously, Walter Mitty. The short story, that both the 1947 and 2013 movie adaptations are based on, highlights the adventures that Walter experiences though his almost constant daydreaming. All three versions also portray Walter as a shy and withdrawn character. Although he is basically the same in all of the different adaptations, that is just about all that is kept from the original short story written by James Thurber. The 2013 version contains the most differences, many of them being due to advancements in film making technology.
One of the changes that the movie uses to immediately differentiate itself from the original story is Walter’s “love life”. In the story he is married, and the whole plot revolves around him running errands with his wife. In the movie, he has a certain infatuation with a woman he works with at LIFE Magazine. He even goes to the extent of joining the dating website eHarmony to talk to her instead of doing it face to face.
Another difference between the story and the movie is the contrasting settings. The story was published in 1939, and therefore the events were written according to that time period. However, the movie takes place in present day and the timeline of events is much more modern. The original story also takes place in the suburbs, while the movie has Walter living in New York City.
The most noticeable difference between the two versions was the ending. In the movie, Walter decides to go on an actual adventure, rather than just thinking about one. The whole purpose of the journey was to retrieve a lost negative from a famous photographer that would serve as the last ever cover photo of LIFE Magazine. In the short story, none of that ever even happened.

The short story can be purchased online, or read at http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/1939/03/18/the-secret-life-of-walter-mitty-2. The newest movie was released in December, 2013, and can be purchased at Walmart.

Eyeliner for Different Eye Shapes

Eyeliner Shapes for Your Eyes
By: Moira Webb

When lining your eyes, one should consider the shape before just lining away. If you have a certain eye shape, some styles can be flattering, and some…not so flattering.  Here are some suggestions for your unique eye shape.

If you have close set eyes, focus on making your eyeliner extend past the outer corner of your eye in order to draw attention away from the space between your eyes. Almond shaped eyes are the most proportionate eyes, and you will more than likely have artistic freedom when it comes to your liner.  Deep set eyes barely require any liner at all, so try to make the line extremely thin.  Completely avoid liner on your upper lash line on down set eyes, and apply it to the lower lash line to balance everything out instead. With hooded eyes, line both the upper and lower lash line to draw the eyes out. Oval eyes pop when you make the line thinner on the inner corner, and thicker in the center.  However, do not bring the liner all the way to the inner corner. Finally, if you have wide set eyes, line both lash lines to achieve a closer look.

Tennessee vs. (9) Georgia

Tennessee will be playing between the hedges against (9) Georgia this Saturday in their SEC East opener.
The Volunteers have been preparing for Georgia for the last two weeks, as they had last weekend off.  They are hoping the extra time to study the Bulldogs will give them an edge in the game.
Junior RB Todd Gurley, possibly being the best running back Tennessee will see all year, will lead Georgia’s run game. Gurley has rushed for 402 yards on 41 carries this year, along with four touchdowns. These numbers are even more impressive since his playing time was sparse in last week’s 66-0 win over Troy. He rushed for 73 yards on 6 attempts.
"I look forward to playing every opponent. I know he's one of the top running backs. I always like playing the best, so I'm glad he's back," said senior Tennessee LB A.J. Johnson.
Tennessee’s offense will be getting back their starting TE, freshman Ethan Wolf. Wolf suffered a deep bone bruise during Tennessee’s 34-19 win over Arkansas State. Before his injury, Wolf was caught eight receptions for 46 yards and one touchdown. Wolf will bring back another big target for senior QB Justin Worley.
Tennessee vs. (9) Georgia will be played this Saturday at 12:00 P.M. in Athens, Georgia. The game will be aired ESPN.

New movies

The movies are always a fun activity but with the weather growing colder, it’s always a good idea to sit in doors and see a new film! There are some coming soon that may be a good idea to catch!
  • ·      Dolphin Tale 2 (PG)  This movie hit theaters the beginning of September, and earned a 6.7 rating on IMDB (International Movie Data base). It is the sequel to the first Dolphin Tale that tells the story of a dolphin, Winter, who didn’t have a tail and they build a prosthetic one. Dolphin Tale is about the team of doctors who previously helped Winter, find a new pool mate after her surrogate mother dies. This would be a great film for the family to go and see!
  • ·      If I Stay (Pg-13) Based on the novel by Gayle Forman, starring actress Chloe Grace Moretz, the film follows her character Mia Hall who is having an out of body experience after a car wreck lands her in a coma. The movie begins with Mia having to decide between following her dreams to Julliard or be with love interest, Adam. The decision changes when she ends up in a coma and must decide between letting go, or leading a life she didn’t expect. This tear jerking film is great for date night or just to see with your best friends!
  • ·      Annabelle (R) The prequel to the horror movie, The Conjuring, this tells of how Annabelle the doll, more or less, came to be. Character John purchases the vintage doll dressed in white for his pregnant wife Mia. His wife is delighted until a satanic cult invades their house and assaults them leaving behind an evil entity that damns the doll Annabelle. This is a great horror film to see for the Halloween month if you’re looking for a good scare!

The iPhone 6

                                                                                                                                            Jared Hixson
                                                                                                                                            Reporter
Just like the release of any other new iPhone, the world was excited and ready to buy. The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 plus broke records selling over 10 million iPhones in the first weekend. Coming out just after iOS 8 boosted sales greatly as Apple claimed that the new iPhone brings their new software to life.
There are many new features to the iPhone 6, but one of the most notable is the weight. Weighing 129 grams, the new iPhone is incredibly light in comparison to other new smartphones on the market. In addition, it is thinner than the iPhone 5s at 6.9 millimeters thin. However, with the thinness comes sacrifices like a small battery and a protruding camera lens. Although it may not seem like a big deal, a camera lens not level with the back of the phone means the phone cannot lay flat and the lens is the first thing to get scratched when being sat down.
The new phone is now all metal and curved around the edges. This means it is a lot more slippery than its predecessor and makes it easier to drop or slip, which was shown with the unboxing of the first iPhone 6.

On the front of the iPhone is the new 4.7 inch screen, and Apple’s new 1334 x 750 display also knows as Retina HD; this is the same as the previous iPhone, the 5s. With all the new features, the new product can be talked up. As one of Apple’s biggest releases in a while, it is an almost guaranteed great buy, but things like battery life or camera quality one can only try out and decide for themselves.
