And Nothing Was the Same

Drake’s rise to fame has been nothing short of spectacular. In the past three years, Drake has been one of the top rappers in the game. The Toronto rapper established a top 3 of this generation with his debut album Thank Me Later along with his Grammy-winning sophomore album Take Care. Drake now looks to further this title with his third studio album Nothing Was the Same which dropped Tuesday.

Drake’s newest album Nothing Was the Same is nothing short of amazing. The album has the energy and emotion his previous albums had. The album begins with the song “Tuscan Leather” where Drizzy addresses and boasts about different things. “I’m as famous as my mentor,” boasts Drake as he refers to his rap mentor Lil Wayne in that line. Drake also addresses a situation with Nicki Minaj, which has caused questions to circulate about what the line is about. “Not even talkin’ to Nicki/ Communication is breaking/ I dropped the ball on some personal ****/ I need to embrace it,” says Drake.
The new album also features a song called “Wu-Tang Forever” which was thought to be some kind of tribute to the 90’s rap group Wu-Tang Clan. The song is quite the opposite. Although the song features a sample of Wu-Tang’s 1997 single “It’s Yourz” the song has Drake singing about a girl he used to know. This is something you would not hear on a rough, gritty Wu-Tang Clan song, but the song in my opinion is one of the top songs of the album.
The songs on the album carry over into each other to create a story. In the last year and a half this has been an occurrence I’ve seen in quite a few albums. This formula in my opinion started with Kendrick Lamar’s good kid, m.A.A.d city, which came out in October 2012. Lamar’s album set a trend for telling a story or journey throughout an album. Drake does the same on this album creating a story, a journey if you will, through the process of making the album. Drake tells you the stories of past loves, his city, and the time it took to achieve his success in music.
The album has features from artists the likes of Jay-Z, Sampha, Big Sean, 2 Chainz, and Jhene Aiko. My favorite song on the album is a tie between “Tuscan Leather” and “From Time” which features singer Jhene Aiko. The beat compliments the lines Drake spits on “Tuscan Leather”. The song “From Time” is probably the most emotional song the entire album. Drake brings the lines of emotion only he can bring singer Jhene Aiko brings a passionate and genuine feel of love and rememberance.

5 Old Kid Shows that aren't on TV Anymore

1.     Drake and Josh-
This show was, and still is, my favorite. It is about two boys with completely different personalities who become stepbrothers. They have to learn to live together and how to get along. While doing this, they face many obstacles, including Drake’s younger sister Megan. She is always thinking of new stunts to pull to get the boys to turn on each other, but in the end, they always find a way to get through it and make up.

2.     Hannah Montana-
This show was great because even though she was a secret pop star, Miley always had time for her family and friends. She led a double life, and was always worried that people would discover she was Hannah Montana and they would not treat her the same. However, she told her closest friends and they helped her get through high school as a normal person, and they were by her side when she was Hannah Montana.

3.     The Suite Life of Zack and Cody-
This show was centered around two twin boys who live in the hotel their single mother preforms in. They are always causing trouble, and the hotel manager is always getting onto them about their “shenanigans”. Their friends at the hotel consist of the candy counter girl, the janitor, the bellboy, and the hotel heiress. This show told me that there could be a home and a family no matter where you live.

4.     The Amanda Show-
This show was crazy. It started with Amanda, who would stand and talk to the audience, and then there would be several sketches that she, and other cast members, starred in. These skits included hillbillies, popular girls in the bathroom, klutzy families, commercials, judges, and many more. My favorite was always Judge Trudy, because her cases were always adults against kids, and she would rule in favor of the kids. At the end of each court dismissal, she would bring out the dancing lobsters and everyone would dance around.

5.     That’s so Raven-
This show was centered around Raven, a teenager with supernatural powers that enabled her to have visions and see the possible future. However, if people made different decisions than what her vision predicted, then the visions and the outcomes would change. Due to this, if the vision she saw was not in favor of her or her friends, she made an elaborate plan that often included dressing up and sneaking in places to try and fix it. I always liked this show because it showed how crazy Raven’s life was while dealing with her friends, family, and hiding the fact that she could see the future from everyone except her two closest friends.

Joker vs. Joker

In July 2008, popular director Christopher Nolan released The Dark Knight stirring comic loving community. Nolan’s rendition of Batman starred Hollywood hunk Christian Bale and heartthrob Heath Ledger. Ledger passed away early 2008, before the film had been released, sparking fans sympathy. Critics compare Ledger’s role as the Joker to Jack Nicholson’s Joker role in Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman film.
Nicholson knew he had to be the kookiest bad guy fans had seen, which was easy for him considering his history of eccentric roles. Nicholson’s take on the Joker creates more of a cartoon villain-ish persona than Ledger’s. Nicholson does have some creepy characteristics like when he says, “Tell me kid, you ever danced with the Devil in the pale moonlight?” right after taking the lives of Bruce Wayne’s parents. Ledger’s take on the Joker insights more terror because of his completely unhinged persona.
One difference between the films remains in Burton’s film the audience sees how the Joker acquired his scars that give him his bone-chilling grin. The Joker’s real name is Jack Napier, and the way he developed his scars was accidentally falling into a vat of toxic waste while trying to steal incriminating documents from a factory.
In Nolan’s film the audience hears many different stories the Joker provides about his scars. It was more chilling for me to hear Ledger’s deranged Joker voice ask, “Do you know how I got these scars?” but some fans and critics prefer Burton’s film for the sake of knowing.
I like both Nicholson’s wacky take on the Joker and Ledger’s macabre persona. But with Ben Affleck as the new Batman, a new Joker may be in the works.

Ask Allie

Dear Allie,
I was out of school for a week and my make-up works really stressful. Do you have any tips?
                 ~stick and stressed

Dear Sick and Stressed,
Missing a week of school is hard work to catch up on.Some things that could help you catch up is go up to your teachers after class and ask your teachers if you could stay after school for tutoring. You can always use your advisory time and before school to do your make-up work. You could also ask your friends that have the same classes for their notes. Try not to get to stressed out, it never helps anything.
           Stay Healthy,
            Allie

iOS 7, Love it or hate it?

iOS what? The new Apple software update hit all users last Wednesday. So what’s so great about the update? The biggest question is: is it even worth it?
With iOS 7, Apple took a product millions of people already use on a day to day basis and made it into something even more useful and more interesting to all users. It’s still just as easy to use and navigate. You don’t want to miss out on the brilliant new features and the sleek new layout. iOS 7 can still be navigated in ways that are noticeably familiar. The plus side to the familiar features is that there is no need to relearn everything!
The most frequently asked question was, “Is it even worth it to update?” Teacher Chad Hensley stated, “Every time I update I end up losing something.” He has not updated yet and does not plan to anytime soon. In contrast, I asked frequent iPhone user Cammie McGreevy her take on the exciting new update. When asked the most noticeable differences between iOS 6 and iOS 7 McGreevy mentioned some interesting subjects. “The first thing I noticed was that itunes was different,” McGreevy said with enthusiasm. She also noted that each artist name in her intunes libray now had a photo besides their name.
Besides the new itunes layout, the camera, messaging, and a number of the apps have taken on a newer, cleaner look. If you’re looking for an exciting new change iOS 7 could be for you!
