Summer to Fall Makeup

Summer To Fall Makeup
By: Moira Webb

Trends for a certain season are almost as old as makeup itself. While some looks are timeless and fit perfectly with every season, it is also good to change up your look and take things such as temperature and your skin into account.

Dewy skin is all the rage in Summer. Your skin is replenishing oils faster, and you do not have to worry about dry skin. Lighter foundations and BB creams are also worn. However, with the change in seasons, one might want to consider a matte foundation as opposed to a dewy one. It is also important to use a moisturizing foundation, or to hydrate your skin before foundation, as the cooler weather could potentially dry out your skin.

When people think about Summer makeup, they either think about bright eyeshadows, or little to no eyeshadow at all. While bright eyeshadows are fun and playful, in Fall it is best to stick with neutral and darker eyeshadows. Taupes and crimson colors are very on trend for Fall 2014.

Staying with the bright Summer theme, bright lips are a must in the Summer. Glossy lips and fun colors match everyone’s tans. However, in Fall the lipstick scene is very different. Though it is not quite Winter and time to bust out the deep dark reds and purples, it is good to darken your colors a bit. Muted matte colors are often seen. Common colors include plum, red, burgundy, and cinnamon.

While it is fun to follow makeup trends and change up your look, it is important to remember that there are no rules in makeup. The joy about makeup is that you control it and are able to make yourself whatever you want. However, if you ever want to try a seasonal look, you could fall in love with it. New makeup looks can always surprise and delight you.

Pros and Cons of Technology in School

In 2013, South Doyle High School was selected for a technology grant that gave them the ability to provide laptops for every South-Doyle student attending the school. The point of this technology is to prepare students for careers that are technology dependent, and enhance their educational experience in high school. The MacBook’s given to South Doyle have several positive influences on a student’s high school career, but there are also downsides that call students to strive towards integrity.
Countless benefits have come out of the laptops. To begin, the computers provide a device or platform for students that do not have technology at home. In addition, laptops allow students to stay more organized in terms of turning in homework, keeping track of their courses and communication with teachers. For example, many students lose homework in their backpacks, but the MacBook’s give students a method of keeping organized. Finally, the computers provide a way of connecting to the Internet. Students can research, communicate and many other through the use of the laptops.
Although the purpose of the computers is to be utilized for education, technological advances in our society present distractions for the persons using them. To begin, with Internet access comes responsibility. Students are able to get on illegal and inappropriate websites. Students must have the integrity to do what they are supposed to. In addition, the Internet has games and entertainment that can be a major distraction to users. This is a huge problem for teachers who must always make sure students are on task. In addition, the cost of a broken or lost computer is very high.  As Uncle Ben said, “With great power comes great responsibility.”
Lastly, technology and the internet can be an addiction. It can make a person antisocial, and change one’s mood. Being on technology too often takes time away from friends and family, and being outside or doing physical activities.

To conclude, the laptops provided to South Doyle High School can be a positive and negative thing. It all depends on the choices of a student when using what’s provided to them for an educational purpose. However, in the end, it is a matter of opinion and one must ask themselves: are the educational uses of a computer worth the distraction and responsibility?

ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

ALS also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disease. This harmful disease affects the nerves in the brain and the spinal cord. The nerves that run from the brain to the spinal cord are most commonly recognized at motor neurons. With the death of motor neurons, an individual will eventually lose all of their motor skills and eventually become paralyzed. ALS is the cause of two deaths per 100,000 people.
Several individuals are diagnosed with ALS every year. Some celebrities that suffer from ALS include famous baseball player, Lou Gehring, well known professor, Stephen Hawking, and Mary Valastro, the mother of Carlos Valastro (The Cake Boss).
To raise awareness for this awful disease there was a challenge created that is well known as the “ice bucket challenge”. This process of the challenge goes as follows: first you are nominated by someone to do it, after you accept the challenge a bucket of ice cold water is to be dumped on one’s head, finally the nomine nominates whoever they want to also take on the challenge. However, if the challenge is not completed in 24 hours, a one hundred dollar donation is to be made. The challenge is a chain reaction and has increasingly spread across the country. Between July 29th and August 11th $1.35 million has been raised nationally for this association. Last year during that time period the amount of money raised was on $22,000.
With the spread and popularity of social media being at its peak it is no wonder the challenge has spread like wild fire. Not only are individuals doing this challenge across the country but celebrities are also taking part in the challenge. If the ice bucket challenge is new information to you but you would like to participate in raising awareness just simply click the links below for ideas on how to do your own ice bucket challenge! Good luck!!

Band Captain and Drum Major 2014-2015

The new school year approached, and the South-Doyle band underwent several changes in leadership this summer. The band decided who would fill the position of band captain and drum major over the 2014 summer band camp. The band captain for this year is senior Alexxis Jester, who was voted into the spot by her fellow band members.  Drum Major senior Zac Morgan auditioned for the spot last year and due to no competition this year, gained the spot again.
The band captain is the position of being Mr. Taylors “right hand man.” To be band captain, the band votes for three nominees and then votes again for each nominee.  Most of the band captains duties are to give motivational speeches, accept awards at competitions and help keep things organized.
“I felt honored because that meant the people in band wanted me to represent them,” said Jester.
Zac Morgan auditioned for the spot of drum major his junior year and shared it with Brittney Gowey. Drum major’s duties are mainly to know the call times, when to be in uniform, load the band bus, head down to the field, and answer questions for the kids.
“I personally love the role because in the band we are all a huge family, and I love feeling like I can help and lead such a great group dedicated to making music and bringing some noise to the school,” said Morgan.
He feels the band has prepped well for the marching show this year “Framed in Jazz” and that they are improving the sound of the stand tunes to create the Friday night atmosphere.
Through all the changes the band endured over the summer, a tradition remained. In the band room there is a sign as you leave that reads, “As you leave these halls, your DREAMS become reality, the FUTURE becomes the present and your LEGACY is left behind” and it has been a tradition to jump up and touch the sign before every game. Jester and Morgan have been in the marching band all four years of high school and are happy to be in the positions.

“Being in the band and playing is one thing, but being able to stand in front of the much and actually create how you want it to change and sound is a whole new experience that I love so much,” Said Morgan.
